Bookmark the Landmark

2023, video installation, single channel, sized variable

Ho Wing Michelle LEE extends her research from the looted books during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong to the field research of the Library of the Governor-General of Taiwan, and its temporary office (now the Bangka Qingshui Zushi Temple in Wanhua) during the period of Japanese rule. The project focuses on the different elements of the library: books, architecture and readers, exploring the clues left by the three in historical time and space, and outlining an interpretive path in historical materials.

 

The work is presented in two parts: the first part starts with the artist’s identity as a traveller and an alternative observation of the historical scene in the city, including documenting and exploring the circulation locations of library collections during the war. Through the history of the specificity of the colonial library, the artist wants to search for her personal meanings within the visual rhetoric space. The second part uses the space under renovation as a metaphor, presenting scattered historical fragments from different time and space on the scaffolding structure, showing the renewal and production of space. The parking lot was once the rear hall of Zushi Temple and was one of the locations where collections were stored. Those enclosed spaces are like some spaces of other dimensions, which is constructed as a threshold that can be entered. The historical relics that have yet to be discovered under the parking lot are isolated from real space, similar to the heterotopia mentioned by Foucault, which is situated between the real space and fictional space, and its location contains compressed knowledge and culture. It just so happened that the Temple was being renovated in recent years. The artist printed the traces of the archaeological site where the parking lot was built in the rear hall in collotype to commemorate the founding place of the Library of the Governor-General of Taiwan. By repeatedly transferring the image of the architecture through collotype technique, it is like recreating the walking process of the artist geographically. A copy of the Library of the Governor-General of Taiwan’s library catalogue will be presented in the exhibition, thereby constructing a reading space about the production of colonial knowledge, and presenting the disappeared library in the form of book pages so that everyone can gather and share it.

李可穎從香港被日本佔領時期被掠奪書籍的研究,延伸到台灣日治時期臺灣總督府圖書館和其臨時辦公室(現艋舺清水巖祖師廟)的歷史研究及現地踏查。計劃聚焦在圖書館之不同要素:圖書、建築和讀者,探尋三者在歷史時空中留下的線索,在史料上勾勒出可理解的路徑。
 

創作呈現兩個部分:第一部分以藝術家的旅者身份,對城市中歷史場域的另類觀察作為開端,包括紀錄探尋戰時古籍的流轉地,從殖民地圖書館這個特異性尋找這段歷史之於個人的意義。第二部分以正在整修的空間作為意象,把不同時空的歷史影像在鷹架結構上零碎地呈現,展示出空間的更新和生產。停車場所在地曾是祖師廟的後殿,是其中一個存放館藏的地點。如今那些被圍封的空間就像一些異空間,建構成為一個可被進入的閾限。停車場下方尚待發現的文物,被隔離於現實空間。如傅柯提及的異托邦,介於真實空間和虛構空間之間,其所在包含被壓縮的知識和文化。近年祖師廟正在整修,藝術家把當年在後殿因建設停車場的考古場域痕跡以珂羅版印製出來,以紀念總督府圖書館草創之地。透過珂羅版重覆移轉建築物影像,如同藝術家在地理上來回移動的過程再現。本次將展示其中一本總督府圖書館和漢書目錄複製本,藉此建構一個有關殖民知識生產的閱讀空間,把已消失的圖書館以書頁形式出現,讓眾人可以聚合和分享。
