A Cold Wind Blows

2025, video installation

This artwork explores the historical trajectories of Green Island in Hong Kong and Green Island in Taiwan, both of which serve as places of detention. Drawing parallels between these two islands and their inherent states of isolation, the artist constructs an ineffable video sculpture using various materials. This work resonates with the themes of displacement and uncertainty experienced by refugees who fled from persecution.

The video work is divided into two parts: The first chapter is inspired by the novel Boat People by Canadian-Vietnamese author Phan Trụ, evoking the chaotic atmosphere of the post-Vietnam War era and paralleling it with the period of White Terror in Taiwan. The second part connects the historical events of the Green Island Reception Centre in Hong Kong in the 1980s with the time and space of the 228 Incident in Taiwan, using the text of the novel Hong Kong by Taiwanese-Japanese author Eikan Kyū. The video narrates the journey of five young people who fled from Taiwan to Hong Kong in search of freedom, and depicts the common destiny of other individuals. The artist deliberately juxtaposes and interchanges scenes from these texts, using intertextuality to reassemble the content and compare how similar events unfold in different times and spaces.​​​

創作以香港青洲(Green Island)跟臺灣綠島作對照,探索兩座島嶼作為拘留地的歷史軌跡,並以此根源作為基點,交織兩座島嶼在自有的隔籬狀態下的平行現實。藝術家利用不同的物質形塑一個無以名狀的錄像雕塑,呼應難民為逃離迫害而遷徙的離散與不確定性。
 

錄像作品分為兩部份:第一章擷取加拿大籍越華作家潘宙的小說《船上的人》,以越戰結束後的亂世現場回溯台灣民眾白色恐怖時期的氛圍;第二部分以臺灣裔日本作家邱永漢的小說《香港》文本,從臺灣二、二八事件的時空連接八十年代香港青洲羈留中心的歷史事件。錄像以小說中五個為爭取自由而從台灣逃亡香港的青年之心路歷程,敍述經歷相似命運的他者。藝術家特意錯配和互換文本本身的情景,以互文性手法重新組合內容,比對不同時空下事件如何以相似的方式反覆發生。
